6 Things to do in Tahoe When You Get Snowed In

With back-to-back storms and feet upon feet of snow piling up, Tahoe has been buried this month. So far this season, Squaw Valley ski area has received over 408 inches — that’s 34 feet of snow! — while Kirkwood has racked up more than 359 inches. One look at Instagram will tell you there have dreamy powder days aplenty, but all of that snow can have its downsides, too.

With high avalanche danger, hammering winds at high elevations, and chairlifts submerged in snowdrifts, Tahoe’s 14 ski resorts can’t always maintain normal operations during the heaviest of storms. Interstate 80 and Highway 50 — the main arteries connecting the San Francisco Bay Area to Tahoe — have been closed for long durations during these recent weather events.

Check the CalTrans QuickMap app for the latest on road conditions, accidents, and closures. If you’re planning to hit the streets on foot or bike, the Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coalition recently released a map showing updates on what bike paths usually get plowed.

Let’s say you made it Tahoe, scored some epic skiing, but then the storm really sunk in. With roads closed and minimal chairlifts operating, you can’t leave but you also may not be able to ski. What are you to do? Build a snowman, read a book, drink copious amounts of coffee? That’s a good start. Here are some other things around town to keep you busy.
